E mais uma ilustração com cachorro! Não apenas um, mas vários...!

A ilustração acima é sobre um problema comum para quem é dono de cachorro. Ansiedade, solidão e simplesmente tédio são algumas das causas que levam cachorros a os móveis da casa e cavar buracos no jardim.

Decidi dar um toque de "aventura" com os cachorros bagunçando em casa, numa cena que poderia estar acontecendo apenas algns minutos antes do dono chegar...

Também é importante notar que esses hábitos destrutivos, além de um problema para o dono, representam perigo para o cachorro. Na ilustração um dos cachorros cavou um buraco fundo demais, o sofá ameaça cair na cabeça do outro cachorro, e etc...

Loneliness, anxiety or boredom are some of the causes for the chewing and digging problem. Because of that, I decided to create a image that could have a kind of "adventure feel" and be a scene happening just few moments before the owner arrives at home. The dogs are just looking for something to do...!

Also, it's important to take care of all the chewing and digging behavior because, ultimately, this behavior can cause harm to the dog. It's a problem for both the dog and the owner of the dog. In the illustration, one of the dogs made a hole too deep, the couch is treating to collapse over the head of another dog and so on...

E nesse ano que acabou, teve um monte de coisas legais. Não faltou trabalho (ainda bem!) legais para clientes legais, uma de minhas ilustrações preferidas - Mano A Mano - foi escolhida para integrar a galeria da American Illustrator, o paper toy Dentuço fez sua estréia na seção Print And Play... Mas gostaria de destacar 3 coisas que foram muito especiais para mim:

The year of 2009 is over and a lot of cool things happened. I had a lot of exciting commissions (thank God!), one of my favorite illustrations - Mano A Mano - was chosen to be part of the American Illustrator gallery, The Bucket-Tooth Car paper toy made its very successful debut... But I would like to point out 3 things that were really special to me:



Em 2008, ao voltar do Bistecão Ilustrado, pensei em como seria legal se tivesse alguma coisa parecida, aqui em Brasília... E agora tem! Desde Julho desse ano temos o Rabiscão, o encontro de ilustradores que acontece todos os mês na Tio Gú Creperia. O Rabiscão dá oportunidade de conhecer e encontrar pessoalmente ilustradores talentosos da cidade e é o motivo pelo qual aguardo ansioso pela chegada da segunda sexta-feira do mês... Obrigado de coração a todos que ajudam a fazer do Rabiscão uma realidade! Em 2010 tem mais! Espero que o Rabiscão continue durante muito tempo e reunindo cada vez mais ilustradores não apenas de Brasília mas - por que não? - do Brasil.

In 2008, when I came back from the Bistecão Ilustrado (a gathering of illustrators that takes place in São Paulo) I thought about how cool could it be if we had something similar in my home town... This year the Rabiscão was born, a monthly meeting of illustrators and a pleasant opportunity to get out of the shell for a little while and meet fellow illustrators. The Rabiscão will continue in 2010...



Quando recebi o convite para fazer parte da Autumn Society of Philadelphia, não imaginava o quão divertido seria... E é gratificante poder trocar idéias com artistas de grande talento e cujo trabalho é simplesmente um festa para os olhos. Não é a toa que a Autumn Society já está atraindo a atenção não apenas em Philly ou nos Estados Unidos, mas também em outros países. Gostaria de agradecer ao meu amigo Chogrin (que agora não está na Philadelphia... Recebeu um chamado da Cartoon Network!) pelo convite e pelo apoio durante as exposições desse ano...

When I received the invitation to be part of the Autumn Society of Philadelphia, I couldn't imagine how cool would that be... A lot of great artists to meet and very exciting exhibitions, like the Golden Age of Comics or the Dia de Los Muertos Show. My big thanks to Chogrin and all of the Autumn Society for having me!



E em 2009 teve mais uma edição do Lürzer's Archive Specials: 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 09/10 e dessa vez lá estou eu, no meio de um monte artistas maravilhosos. Quero agradecer a atenção e paciência da Diana Dragomir... A inclusão de três ilustrações minhas nesse livro tão especial me deixou muito feliz.

And 2009 brought a new edition of the Lürzer's Archive Specials: 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 09/10 and this time you can check my work there, with many other wonderful artists. Spotlight: Cultivando Sementes/Growing Seeds

A ilustração em destaque - "Cultivando Sementes" - foi feita para ilustrar a capa de um questionário sobre o Projeto Mandalla, um sistema de canteiros concêntricos, ao redor de uma fonte de água e material orgânico. Esse projeto belíssimo (sobre o qual eu não sabia nada antes de fazer essa ilustração) acontece no sertão nordestino ajuda a devolver a dignidade e esperança ao homem do campo. Penso que é uma escolha bacana para o primeiro destaque desse ano que está começando...

This illustration - "Growing Seeds" - was created for the cover of a questionnaire about Project Mandalla, a project that brings dignity and hope for the families living in the poor areas of Brazil. Because of that I think it's a suitable choice for being the first illustration on the Spotlight in this new brand year.

American Illustration 28

"Mano A Mano" foi escolhida para fazer parte da galeria American Illustration 28. Fiquei muito feliz com a notícia, Mano A Mano é umas das minhas ilustrações preferidas!

A ilustração foi criada para seção Dito e Feito (que conta a origem de expressões que usamos no dia a dia) da revista Aventuras Na História. O título, "Mano A Mano", significava a disputa entre dois toureiros que alternadamente se apresentavam na arena.



One of my favorite illustrations - "Mano A Mano" - was chosen to be part of the American Illustration 28!

I did it for a Brazilian magazine called "Aventuras Na História" (Adventures Through History) that features an section called "Dito E Feito" (Said And Done) that tells a little bit about the origin of some expressions. In this case, Mano A Mano (which means "one vs. one") describes the match between two bullfighters taking turns to perform in front of the crowd in the arena.

Spotlight: Santa Claus Is Coming To Town!

O ano já está acabando, estamos em dezembro... Então...

Em destaque, minha tradicional ilustração de Papai Noel... Feita apenas para desejar a todos um Feliz Natal e um maravilhoso Ano Novo! Ei... 2010 é o "ano em que faremos contato"!

O texto na ilustra, caso alguém esteja se perguntando, é um trecho da música "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town"... Eu amo essa música!

The illustration in the spotlight is my traditional Santa Claus illo... Made to say Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all! Hey... 2010 is "the year we make contact"!

The text on the illustration is from the song "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town"... I love this song!

Spotlight: Thor + Odin + Loki

No Spotlight temos três ilustrações, um tríptico com os deuses nórdicos: Thor, Odin e Loki. Eu sempre quis desenhar esses três e finalmente surgiu uma oportunidade!

In the Spotlight we have a triptych with the Norse Gods: Thor, Odin and Loki. I always wanted to draw those three and an opportunity came at last!



Odin, acompanhado pelos corvos Huginn e Muninn. Aqui ele aparece no disfarce de "Andarilho", de barba comprida, chapéu e cajado. Na hora de desenhar o cajado, fiz com que se parecesse mais com a lança Gungnir. Como Odin é considerado o pai da escrita (ele descobriu as runas), achei que seria interessante que a ponta da lança se parecesse com a ponta de uma pena de escrever.

Odin - with his pair of ravens Huginn and Munnin - disguised as the "Wanderer" with long beard, hat and staff. I made the staff to look more like Odin's spear Gungnir and since Odin is related to the writing form (he discovered the runes) I thought it would be interesting to make the spear tip to look like a pointed nib.



Thor, o deus do trovão. Existem muitas possibilidades de desenhar Thor, mas era importante que aprecessem suas três mais importantes possessões: Jarngreipr (as luvas Luvas de Ferro), o cinto Megingjord e, é claro, o poderoso martelo Mjollnir. Thor aparece de véu, grinalda e saindo de um vestido de noiva porque escolhi uma cena da história onde Mjollnir é roubado por gigantes. Thor precisa recuperar o martelo e o único jeito de entrar no reino dos gigantes sem ser detectado foi se disfarçando de noiva do Rei dos Gigantes. Nesse retrato, vemos Thor no momento em que ele recupera Mjollnir e revela sua verdadeira identidade. E logo em seguida encheu os gigantes de porrada. Thor, the god of thunder. There are many possibilities to depict Thor but it was important to showcase his three most important possessions: Jarngreipr (the Iron Gloves), Megingjord (the Power-Belt) and - of course! - the mighty hammer Mjollnir. Here, Thor is wearing a full wedding dress (with bridal head-dress) because it is from a scene of the "Theft of Mjollnir" tale. This is the moment when Thor recovers his hammer and reveal his true identity to the King of Giants. You can check a the complete tale here.



Loki foi o mais complicado de retratar, como não podia deixar de ser... Tentei passar a qualidade de "outsider" de Loki, um personagem que está sempre criando problemas para os outros deuses de Asgard, por isso a roupa estranha, a pose não-dinâmica (se comparada com Odin e Thor) e a provocacão de levantar a túnica como se quisesse "estragar a foto". Quem possui familiaridade com a mitologia nórdica também vai reparar na boca com cicatrizes... Certa vez, Loki causou tanta confusão que costuraram sua boca. É um cara, no mínimo, desagradável. Aqui no blog você pode ver a versão "não censurada", tirem as crianças da sala! Ha ha ha :0)

Loki was... well... the trickiest to portrait. He has an interesting scarred lips (Loki had his lips stitched up once). Since he is an "outsider", always creating problems and provoking the other asgardian gods, I choose to put him in those strange clothes and in a totally non-dynamic pose (if compared with Odin and Thor). And the obscene gesture of lifting his tunic and pissing on the floor, as if he's trying to ruin the "picture". He is a trickster, after all. Here you can see the "uncensored" version, so get the children out of the room! Ha ha ha! :0)

Sancti Tantus

E nesse mês, dia 11, a partir das 19 horas, na Creperia Tio Gú (413 Sul) tem mais uma edição do Rabiscão, o encontro mensal de ilustradores de Brasilia. E o cara acima é o Sancti Tantus, ou se preferir, o "São Tantos", o patrono do Rabiscão. No último encontro foram sorteadas duas canecas com essa figura. Também tem camisetas disponíveis para quem quiser encomendar: No blog do Rabisdog!

This is Sancti Tantus, the patron of the Rabiscão, an illustrators meeting that takes place every month here in Brasília. I created this illo to promote the event and now there are mugs and t-shirts with Tantus available to boys and girls. If you speak portuguese, check the Rabiscão blog!

Mexendo o Esqueleto/Shaking Your Skeleton

Esse esqueleto dançando foi criado para a seção "Criar e Montar" da nova edição da Mundo Escola, uma revista voltada para a educação pública. O artigo fala sobre como ensinar e aprender - de forma lúdica - a função do esqueleto. Usei as cores para indicar movimento e também para evitar que a ilustra adquirisse uma atmosfera sinistra.

The illustration in the spotlight was created for Mundo Escola (a Brazilian magazine about education in public schools). Titled "Education in Motion" this illustration is about teachers and their never ending search for training and specialization.



Na mesma revista também fiz a ilustração acima, para um artigo sobre as diferenças - de todo o tipo que se possa imaginar - entre as crianças numa sala de aula. Busquei retratar essas diferenças evitando estereótipos e por isso optei por destacar as diferentes crianças usando cores e formas geométricas.

8-Bit And Beyond Show

Hoje é a estréia da exposição "8-bit & Beyond", mais uma iniciativa da Autumn Society of Philadelphia, o mesmo coletivo de artistas por trás da bem-sucedida exposição "The Golden Age Show", que no Brasil foi tema de uma matéria no site Universo HQ!

Today is the day for the openning of the show "8-bit & Beyond" presented by the Autumn Society of Philadelphia! Following the awesome "The Golden Age Show", this new event "featuring the works from 50+ artists from Philly and around the world" will take place at Brave New Worlds comic shop in Philadelphia.



O tema do "8-bit & Beyond" é video games - desde Super Mario até Halo - e eu participo dessa exposição com uma ilustração inspirada no jogo Yar's Revenge, originalmente criado para o jurássico Atari em 1981 mas que recebeu uma nova versão para o Game Boy Color em 1999. Então... Acho que dá para dizer que é um jogo de 8-bits, não?

Por causa da ilustração da capa da versão do Atari, eu sempre pensei que o Yar fosse um tipo de mosca mecânica e então fui adiante com essa idéia. Abaixo, um pequeno detalhe da minha ilustração, o Yar:

"8-bit & Beyond" is about video games - from Super Mario Bros to Halo - and my piece is inspired by an old... I mean... classic game: Yar's Revenge! It's was a game originally developed for the Atari 2600 but it was remade for the Game Boy Color in 1999... I guess you can say it's an 8 bit game, right?

I always thought that the Yar was some kind of mechanic housefly (because of that illustration on the cover of the Atari 2600 version) so I went with this concept. Bellow you can see a small detail of the illustration, the Yar itself:




Também foi fonte de inspiração esses trabalhos de escola onde pedem para capturar um inseto e pregar numa caixa com uma etiqueta com o nome do bicho embaixo.

I also was inspired by those school assignments where you have to pin and label an insect inside a box. I tried to give that feel to my illustration.



Para finalizar, além de um monte de espaço em branco em volta do personagem, adicionei uma moldura também branca. O branco serve de ponte entre o jogo antigo e os novos consoles, em particular o Nintendo Wii.

In the final piece I used those huge white spaces surrounding the Yar character plus an all white frame to make a connection between the old game with the new generation of consoles, in particular the Nintendo Wii.



A exposição "8-bit & Beyond" acontecerá a partir das 18h, na comic shop Brave New Worlds, Philadelphia, Estados Unidos. Com música ao vivo, cortesia do Doctor Octoroc.
